Incomplete hydrolysis of effluents and high production of volatile organic acids make the effluent hostile to methanogenic microorganisms. For example, in an imbalanced medium, acid generation can be up to 15 times greater than the conversion of compounds into methane, leading to the death of methanogenic archaea and potentially causing biological systems to fail in a short period.
