Protozoa

Protozoa

They are microscopic, unicellular and heterotrophic creatures who live alone or in colonies, freely or performing parasitism and can inhabit the most varied types of environments. These microorganisms have a very important role in activated sludge process: it is through its predation that removal of free bacteria is ensured as well as clarifying the effluent.

The main specimens found in activated sludge systems are classified mainly by means of locomotion, and are divided into three major groups:

Ciliates

Flagellate

Amoebas
